Flooring Terms You Need To Know (Part 1)
Here is a quick glossary of flooring terms to make you sound like an expert in getting what you need for when doing floor shopping with a flooring company in Singapore.
Acoustic Underlay
Used as underlay for different flooring for sound insulation. This is to reduce vibration and sound impact to travel out of the room and affect your neighbours.
Artificial Turf
Also known with various names such as synthetic grass, turf grass or grass carpet. Known for its evergreen blades and low maintenance, this is suitable for sheltered area where soil and dirt is not readily available. Making them a popular alternative for balcony flooring
Cement Screed
Cement Screed or cement screed flooring is an essential step to prepare for any flooring installation. Primary material includes cement, mixer, and water. This is to make sure floor is level. before laying self leveling and eventual floor installation such vinyl flooring or tile.
Texture will be rough, self levelling will be required.
Certification
Certification to verify claims and international standards that we have to follow. Standards that will be only passed by independent labs such as SGS, Intertek, TUV SUD

Click (or clic) locking
One of the easiest and common way to install vinyl flooring. This is usually applicable for Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) or Luxury Vinyl Panels (LVP) flooring. Click locking systems usually removes the need for adhesive and available for overlay on top of current flooring
Commercial
Any venue that a commercial activity to be done. This is a consideration that you may want to think about as warranty may differ for LVT flooring

Engineering Wood
A wooden flooring that is made primarily from wood pieces, sawdust, and wood fiber composites. It is considered to be more sustainable compare to solid wood.
It is getting more popular among landed property owners in Singapore.
EPDM
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a rubber flooring made out of small granules. It has properties of being heat resistant and now a common staple of flooring for playground or running tracks in stadiums.
Formaldehyde
One of the most common Volatile Organic Compound (VOC). Formaldehyde though can be found miniscule traces naturally, it can be found mostly in flooring and wooden furniture. Released by “off-gassing” commonly known as the “new house smell”.
It is toxic in nature. Short term symptoms may include respiratory irritation and skin irritation. Long term effects may include Cancer.

Gym Floor

Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) sometimes also be referred as Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring. It is inexpensive choice and versatile as a flooring making it to be popular for HDB/BTO owners.
It is available in click locking system. Making it easy to install and maintain.
Luxury Vinyl Panel (LVP)
