This is a part 2 of the glossary for the flooring terms that you need to know when shopping for a floor.
Outdoor Decking
The installation of Hardwood flooring or Composite Wood. It can be installed at your balcony area for HDB or for a front deck. It is also a common flooring that is used by swimming pools due to its luxurious look and anti slip properties
Residential
Like commercial flooring the terms residential is essential for warranty when it comes to flooring. Residential is consist of
- BTO/HDB Resale
- Condo
- Landed Property
SBR
SBR (or Styrene-butadiene rubber) is synthetic rubber that mixed with EPDM which is a common primary material for playground flooring. It makes EPDM stronger and more heat resistant. It is also added as a under layer before EPDM to make the flooring softer.

Self Leveling
The finishing step for cement screed. Cement screed will leave a very rough surface that level more than 25 mm. While Self Leveling compound only covers about 5mm to smoothen the rough flooring surface left by cement screed.
SGBC
SGBC (Singapore Green Building Council) a governing body for 2 certification “Singapore Green Building Services Certification Scheme” and “Singapore Green Building Product Certification Scheme“. It is encouraged for sustainable building in the Singapore’s building industry. This includes products and process.

Skirting

Sports Flooring
Sports vinyl flooring is also another common Gym Floor. However it is also commonly found in multi purpose sports hall. It is optimal for games and sports like Badminton and Basketball. The major difference between LVT/LVP flooring and Sports Flooring is sports flooring is designed more optimal for sports and have better shock absorption
Stone Plastic Composite (SPC)
SPC Flooring or Stone Plastic Composite is another kind of flooring that is another popular choice for vinyl flooring. Made primarily out of stone and plastic, making SPC a more sustainable flooring as compare to Luxury Vinyl Tiles.
The major difference between SPC and LVT or LVP flooring is SPC is harder and more rigid. That results in slightly noisier footstep as compare to LVT flooring
Tiles
Another common flooring for HDB or BTO flats. Common material used for tiles are ceramic and porcelain.
Wood Plastic Composite (WPC)
Wood Plastic Composite or WPC commonly use as a primary material for outdoor decking. Due to treatment being done, it is now slip resistant, splinters and termite free which usually associated with natural wood flooring.
Wear Layer
The top layer of any Luxury Vinyl Panel (LVP) flooring. It is the layer that protects the LVP flooring The most common wear layer that is available in the Singapore market is about 5mm. Depending on the traffic on the LVP flooring, wear layer should last you for a long time.
