Do I need to apply silicone to my LVP flooring?

Do I need to apply silicone to my LVP flooring

One of the many reasons why LVP is so popular is that itโ€™s water resistant. It protects the subflooring (or the floor that your LVP is laying). So here is a question: do you need to seal or apply silicone to your LVP flooring?

TL;DR Answer: There is no need to add silicone at joint lines or at the seams. But, you need to add sealant at the expansion gaps.

What will happen if LVP flooring is not water-resistant?

One of the biggest advantage for LVP is its water resistance. This can make the sub-leveling floor, like self-leveling compound or cement screed, crack. Excess moisture can lead to this issue if it’s not water resistant.

Excess moisture can seep into the flooring. This causes the flooring to buckle. This is also why laying LVP flooring in the toilet is not recommended.

That may be the reason why applying silicone seems like a smart choice.

So where to I add the silicone?

It depends on where you are adding silicone. There will be no need to add silicone on the joint lines. Yet, we need silicone at the expansion gaps.

Why sealant is not needed at the joint lines/seams of LVP?

The LVP placement creates joint lines or seams. This includes the Roma Collection and the Milano Collection, both from our own LVP line. This is due to our patented click-locking system. Our click-locking system keeps water and moisture out of the subfloor at the joints. This will prevent damage to the subfloor and the vinyl from warping.

We need silicone at the expansion gaps.

Expansion gaps are spaces left between the wall and flooring on purpose. This is to allow the flooring space to expand. Silicone seals expansion gaps. This stops seepage to the subfloor and prevents damage.

What about adding a skirting?

Adding a skirting can hide the expansion gaps. But, a sealant is still needed as water will still be able to seep beneath the skirting.
