The Difference Between Cement Screed and Self-Levelling

difference between Cement Screed and Self-Levelling

Self-Levelling: Zero Latency

Cement screed and self-levelling is considered to be essential before installation for any flooring. That is why it is a service usually recommended and  appears in almost all quotations and bills of any flooring installation

The purpose of the cement screed is to create a flat, uniform surface for further flooring works such as overlaying of tiles and wood flooring

The purpose of self-levelling is to create a flat uniform surface for further flooring works such as overlaying of Luxury Vinyl Panel (LVP) flooring and EPDM flooring.

What is the difference?

Cement Screed uses cement as a primary material to even the floor for a uniform surface. Used for flooring with significant unevenness (difference of at least 25mm) and will leave a rough finish. Often require labour and screeding tool to level the floor due to low flow rate.

Often applied after cement screeding. With self-levelling compound as a primary material to even the floor for a uniform surface. Used for flooring with very little difference (lesser than 10mm) and will leave a smoother surface. Require lesser labour to level the floor, with higher viscosity, the self-levelling compound is allowed to flow on to the floor levelling the floor.

Can I do Cement screed and not self-levelling?

It depends on the flooring that you want to install. If it is a thicker, harder flooring such as tiles and wood flooring, cement screed is enough.

If it is a flooring that is thinner and more flexible such as Luxury Vinyl Panel (LVP) flooring or epoxy flooring. It is highly recommended. The reason is because LVT or LVP flooring and EPDM flooring will take the shape of the floor.
